What Is Spectrum?

​

Spectrum is an all inclusive student organization that provides a safe space, advocacy, and education for individuals of every background and sexual orientation at Jackson State University and the Jackson community. 

​Spectrum is for the people. We work to increase tolerance, respect, and education for all individuals, especially within the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community. By NO means are we simply a "gay" organization. We are an organization of all people, of every background, creed, and sexual orientation.

Mission Statement

​

To promote awareness, encourage understanding and increase the acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual. transgender and questioning students (LGBTQ), faculty and staff at Jackson State University (JSU) and the families and friends who love them.

​

Our Purpose

​

In accordance with the university's commitment to appreciating human differences and commonalities, Spectrum at JSU works to unite students of the LGBTQ and heterosexual communities in order to create a safe, inclusive campus community that promotes an integrated sense of identity and social responsibility.

Our Motto

​

"Educating and promoting tolerance of the LGBTQ+ community on the campus of Jackson State University and the indifferent community environment."

Membership

​

Requirements:

​

Any student of Jackson State  may join the organization regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth and related conditions), sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, marital status, partnership status, disability, genetic information, alienage, citizenship, military or veteran status, status as a victim of domestic violence/stalking/sex offenses, unemployment status, or any other legally prohibited basis in accordance with federal, state, and city laws.

 

The spectrum understands that there could be portions of our membership who wish to remain anonymous. All topics discussed in our safe spaces are to be kept confidential. A member will never be pressured to release any personal or sensitive information (name, age, orientation, etc.), and the same information will never be recorded in records without permission from the person or persons concerned.

Spectrum stands and strives for the equality of all people. Therefore, it will never turn away or otherwise discriminate against an attendee for reasons of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, or any other creed or characteristic, real or perceived.

Dues:

​

Dues are $10 for the year and may be submitted to the treasurer or another E-board member. If dues are an issue, please talk to the club sponsor about your options.

 

Community Service:

​

The E-board will coordinate community service activities. Suggestions are accepted.

​
